Interference Involving Multiple Reflections

چکیده

Some of the most beautiful effects of interference result from the multiple reflection of light between the two surfaces of a thin film of transparent material. These effects require no special apparatus for their production or observation and are familiar to anyone who has noticed the colors shown by thin films of oil on water, by soap bubbles, or by cracks in a piece of glass. We begin our investigation of this class of interference by considering the somewhat idealized case of reflection and refraction from the boundary separating different optical media. In Fig. 14A(a) a ray of light in air or vacuum incident on a plane surface of a transparent medium like water is indicated by a. The reflected and refracted rays are indicated by ar and at, respectively. A question of particular interest from the standpoint of physical optics is that of a possible abrupt change of phase of waves when they are reflected from a boundary. For a given boundary the result will differ, as we shall now show, according to whether the waves approach from the side of higher velocity or from that of lower velocity. Thus, let the symbol a in the left-hand part of Fig. 14A represent the amplitude (not the intensity) of a set of waves striking the surface, let r be the fraction of the amplitude reflected, and let t be the fraction transmitted. The amplitudes of the two sets of waves will then be ar and at, as shown, Now, following a treatment given by

White-light interference microscopy: effects of multiple reflections within a surface film.

The effects of the presence of a transparent thin film on a test surface in white-light interferometric surface profiling are investigated. An expression is obtained for the output intensity variations in a Michelson interferometer which includes the effect of multiple reflections within the thin film. The number of reflections that need to be considered to obtain good convergence to the correc...

Including source correlation and atmospheric turbulence in a ground reflection model for rocket noise

Acoustic data collected in static rocket tests are typically influenced by ground reflections, but have been difficult to account for. First, the rocket plume is an extended radiator whose directionality results from source correlation. Second, partial coherence of the ground interaction due to atmospheric turbulence can play a significant role, especially for larger propagation distances. In t...

Testing an optical window of a small wedge angle: effect of multiple reflections.

Multiple reflections between two surfaces of a window introduce a fixed pattern error in optical measurements. One way to remove these spurious reflections is to use a reasonably large wedge so that the interference fringes formed by the two surfaces are too dense for the detector to resolve. However, this method does not work if the wedge angle is small, e.g., several arcseconds. By tilting bo...

Resolving Multi-path Interference in Time-of-Flight Imaging via Modulation Frequency Diversity and Sparse Regularization

Time-of-flight (ToF) cameras calculate depth maps by reconstructing phase shifts of amplitude-modulated signals. For broad illumination of transparent objects, reflections from multiple scene points can illuminate a given pixel, giving rise to an erroneous depth map. We report here a sparsity-regularized solution that separates K interfering components using multiple modulation frequency measur...

Simulation of Multipath Impulse Response for Indoor Wireless Optical Channels

We present a recursive method for evaluating the impulse response of an indoor free-space optical channel with Lambertian reflectors. The method, which accounts for multiple reflections of any order, enables accurate analysis of the effects of multipath dispersion on high-speed indoor optical communication. We present a simple algorithm for computer implementation of the technique. We present c...
